Free ETextbook Reader/Study Platform (9:00 am - 10:00 am)
NOOKstudy™ by Barnes & Noble Comes to NMSU Free eTextbook Reader/Study Platform Promises to Help Students Study Smarter, Not Harder Developed with College Students to Include the Features Students Want Most [Fall 2010] - Since it’s not possible to squeeze more hours into the day, NMSU students are always looking for ways to get the most out of the hours they do have. The University Bookstore just may have the solution: NOOKstudy™ by Barnes & Noble. More than an eTextbook reader, NOOKstudy is a feature-rich and easy-to-use software application that allows students to store and manage the digital content for their classes – eTextbooks, class materials, personal notes, and teacher handouts - all in one place. Best of all, NOOKstudy is a free download that works on the PCs or Macs® students already own. “NOOKstudy is so much more than just a simple e-reader application,” notes NMSU Bookstore General Manager Carleen Cirillo. “It’s an amazing and interactive tool that actually helps students improve their educational experience and study smarter, not harder.” Developed with extensive input from students across the country, NOOKstudy incorporates the features and tools that students said would help them get the most out of their limited study time, including:
- The ability to create course specific files where they can house all electronic course content including: syllabi, teacher hand-outs, scanned written notes, links to content
- The flexibility to electronically highlight and take notes in a variety of colors for easier recall and improved organization
- Tools that allow students to tag content for future reference (e.g. “Share with study group,” “Test prep,” “Needs further research,” etc.) making follow-up faster and easier
- The option of having multiple eTextbooks open simultaneously to make studying more efficient
- One click access to complementary online reference materials and resources (e.g. Google, Wikipedia, dictionary, etc.) directly from their eTextbooks
- And much more
Thousands of eTextbooks are accessed using NOOKstudy with more available every month. In addition to offering a wealth of new features and study tools, eTextbooks save students up to 50% over the cost of a new, printed textbook. Students who don’t want to “go digital” with their textbooks can still choose from a variety of options at the NMSU bookstore. “We really are the only place that has all the formats and options students want,” says Cirillo. “Whether they want to shop in-store or online, want new, used, or digital textbooks we are the only place with all these options. Plus the NMSU bookstore is the only source with a guarantee that we’ll have the right book, for the right course, at the right time.” To learn more about NOOKstudy or to download the free application, visit the bookstore’s website www.nmsubookstore.com and click the Textbooks tab.

Networking At The Speed Of Technology Registration (All Day)
NMSU's Arrowhead Center sets up speed dates for entrepreneurs, venture capitalists Searching for the right companion is tough, whether it's looking for a romantic partnership or even a business partnership. To help, New Mexico State University's Arrowhead Center wants to hook up technology entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the state during their event, Networking at the Speed of Technology, Oct. 20 at The Game Bar and Grill in Las Cruces. "This really is a unique opportunity," said Dawn Hommer, a business incubation specialist for the Arrowhead Center. "It's not easy to get an audience with venture capitalists. This kind of meeting can also be very intimidating, so we really want to be proactive in helping these companies." Technology companies selected will have a chance to personally present an abbreviated version of their business plans and capital needs to leading venture capital representatives. The event's format will be much like the popular speed dating where companies will have three minutes to make their pitch and the venture capitalists will have two minutes to ask questions. Then a bell rings, and each company must move on to the next venture capitalist. An informal networking event with the participants and the general public will immediately follow the speed dates. The deadline for companies wanting to take part is Sept. 10. Selected companies must attend two mandatory workshops from 8-10:30 a.m. Sept. 23 and Oct. 14 at the Small Business Development Center. The workshops are designed to help applicants refine their pitches and build confidence in their ideas. Full submission guidelines and application forms are available online at http://techstart.nmsu.edu."One thing companies will definitely walk away with is feedback, which is incredibly valuable," said Chris Keintz, director of innovation for Arrowhead Center's TECHSTART, which helps incubate technology companies. "Whether it's a good idea or a bad idea, whether the idea could be restructured in a certain way, these companies will find out during their meeting with these venture capitalists." The event is sponsored by Arrowhead's TECHSTART Technology Incubator, in partnership with the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance, the New Mexico Small Business Development Center and Arrowhead Center's Entrepreneurship Institute.

CTW for first through third-graders runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Monday from Sept. 13 to May 2. The workshop for fourth through eighth-graders runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday from Sept. 15 to May 4. The cost of each workshop is $300, which may be broken down into payments. Summer Water Restrictions And Water Saving Tips (All Day)
Summer Water Restrictions to Begin Citywide summer water restrictions begin Thursday, April 1 and will be in effect through Thursday, September 30. The annual restrictions prohibit the watering of outside vegetation between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A year-round watering schedule allows residents with even-numbered addresses to water outside vegetation on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Residents with odd-numbered addresses are permitted to water their vegetation on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. No watering is permitted on Mondays. Water restrictions are part of a Water Conservation Ordinance approved by the Las Cruces City Council in September 1996. The City of Las Cruces encourages residents to use water wisely in order to conserve for future demand. WATER SAVING TIPS
- Wash vehicles only with a bucket or hose that has a shut-off nozzle so water doesn't run continuously.
- Water vegetation sparingly so puddles don't appear among plants and water does not flow into the street, alley, or adjacent property.
- Repair water leaks within five days.
- Don't wash concrete, cement or other impervious surfaces with a hose.
- Fix water faucet, toilet, or showerhead leaks immediately.
- Use the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads.
- Avoid running water continuously for rinsing fruits and vegetables, washing dishes, brushing teeth or shaving.
- Re-use water. For example: After washing your car, use the bucket of rinse water to irrigate a dry spot on your lawn.
- Take showers rather than baths; the shorter the better.
- Flush only when necessary. Don't use the toilet as a trash can.
- Keep a bottle of water in the refrigerator; this way you have cold water without running the tap.
- Insulate water heaters and pipes.
- Use a compost heap or a garbage can instead of running the garbage disposal.
- Thaw frozen foods in your refrigerator, not by running warm water over them.

"The quality of our students, as well as their flexibility and mobility, makes them good candidates for employers," said Roseanne Bensley, associate director of Career Services. Participating NMSU students are encouraged to establish an AggieCAREER account on the Career Services website, http://careerservices.nmsu.edu. The AggieCAREER Manager tool provides additional resources to research employers, develop resumes and review in advance campus interview schedules that will take place during the Career Expo. Bensley said participants in the expo should research potential employers in advance as much as possible, dress professionally and bring several copies of their resume.
