Desert Treks: Museum Offers Lake Lucero Tour At White Sands (All Day)
The Las Cruces Museum of Natural History and White Sands National Monument are pleased to announce a ranger-guided tour of Lake Lucero, the source of the “White Sands,” on Saturday, December 6th. Participants need to reserve their spot for the tour in advance. The tour will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Small Missile Range Gate on US Highway 70. Participants will drive their own vehicles and hike approximately ¾ of a mile. In order to caravan to the site, participants should be at the museum by 9:15 a.m. the day of the tour. The museum is located next to J.C. Penney in the Mesilla Valley Mall. Participants need to call the museum to reserve their spot ahead of time. A special use fee is charged for the tour: $3 per person ages 16 and older; and $1.50 for children and to holders of the Golden Age Pass. National Park/Golden Eagle Passports and the White Sands Annual Pass do not apply for this special tour. All vehicles should have a spare tire and sufficient gasoline for the 34-mile round trip to the Lake Lucero trailhead. Each person should have sufficient drinking water, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, good walking shoes, suitable clothing for the weather and a snack if desired. Cameras may not be used while passing through the missile range, but are encouraged for use while at the monument lake area. Most of the gypsum sand that forms the white sands dune field originates in Lake Lucero, a dry lake bed in the southwestern corner of the National Monument. Large gypsum crystals, called selenite, are formed here. As the crystals are exposed to the weather, they break down into sand-size particles, which are blown by southwesterly winds into the dune field. Visitors to Lake Lucero will see the selenite formations spread across the lake bed and learn about the geological conditions that over millions of years created the dune fields at White Sands National Monument. For more information contact, Chris Newsom, Naturalist at 575/522-3120. The TTY number is 575/541-2161.

The New Mexico State University Roadrunner PreK program is accepting enrollment for newly forming morning and afternoon classes. The program, in its second year, is funded by Children, Youth and Families and is open to children who turned 4 years old before Sept. 1 and will attend a qualifying school for kindergarten. Located in NMSU’s Myrna’s Children’s Village, the program has highly educated teachers who have a large pool of resources, Jozwiak said. “The programs at the village are building a strong professional development network that benefits the children,” she said. NMSU Business Incubator Is Open And Looking For Businesses (All Day)
New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center National Security Technology Incubator (NSTI) is searching for small businesses to help get off the ground – especially those with a focus on technology that can be applied to national security. “An incubator like this really has an impact on the larger business community,” said Chris Kientz, director of technology innovation at Arrowhead Center. He said small businesses in the U.S. have nearly a 70 percent chance of failure in their first year. However, in an incubator setting, businesses have a 70 percent chance of survival. NSTI is designed to give companies with a national security emphasis a better shot. NSTI provides small businesses with resources and services to help them make it through the initial start-up phase when they are most vulnerable. It provides office space, business workshops and networking opportunities. NSTI provides a demonstration environment in New Mexico where national security technologies can be tested and proven. It also identifies and coordinates workforce development activities. “This is really a door opener,” said Glyn Anderson, president of Game Production Services, an Albuquerque-based company that creates videogame-style software used in soldier training. The company is in the early stages of forming a partnership with NSTI. “Going through the usual channels, sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the noise of the bigger companies,” he said. “I think this is great. The idea that there is a program like NSTI that’s reaching out to find small businesses like us that might have unique capabilities is great.” Kientz said NMSU and Southern New Mexico are perfect locations for companies with a focus on national security. There is a potential customer base with nearby military facilities at White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base, Kirtland Air Force Base and Fort Bliss. Additionally, Arrowhead Center has partnerships with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Labs, and NMSU’s Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering Center and Physical Science Laboratory. Kientz said other advantages to an incubator setting include the ability to negotiate as a group for lower costs, and access to customer and manufacturer bases. NSTI also provides guidance on intellectual property rights, including patents and copyrights. “Efforts like NSTI are extremely important for small businesses like ourselves. This program allows us to commercialize a lot of technologies and take them to market,” said Roy Anderson, president of Defense Research Associates, an Ohio-based company that develops defense-related technologies in conjunction with government research laboratories. NSTI is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. Arrowhead Center is a nonprofit organization owned by NMSU. Its mission is to promote economic development and student engagement in New Mexico. Funding for this project was made possible by New Mexico’s congressional delegation.

NMSU's Arrowhead Center Awarded $1.2 Million To Study Energy, Jobs, And Water (All Day)
NMSU’s Arrowhead Center awarded $1.2 million to study energy, jobs and water New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center is set to tackle three of the biggest issues in the state – energy, jobs and water. The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a three-year, $1.2 million grant to Arrowhead Center to study connections between fossil fuel production, economic development and water in New Mexico. “We want to see how fossil fuels benefit the state and what can be done to improve that relationship,” said Meghan Starbuck, an assistant professor of economics at NMSU and the energy economist for the project. “When New Mexico provides more energy, it reduces dependence on foreign fuel and creates jobs in the state.” Starbuck said New Mexico has the third largest reserves of natural gas in the nation. The state is also a large producer of crude oil, coal bed methane and uranium. She said New Mexico has an opportunity to create wealth and jobs by using its own energy better rather than importing it from other countries. “New Mexico is rich in natural resources and home of major technological advances over the last century, yet we have a per capita income that’s 20 percent below the national average,” said Jim Peach, co-director of Arrowhead’s policy analysis unit and the energy project’s principal investigator. “The question is, can we do anything about that.” “Fossil fuel production is an important part of the state economy. In recent years, oil and gas production has accounted for more than 10 percent of New Mexico’s gross domestic product,” Starbuck said. “New Mexico is also an ideal place for wind, solar and biomass production. An important issue is how traditional and new energy sources will shape future economic development in the state.” Starbuck said she was surprised at the small amount of information that existed in New Mexico about energy and its economic impacts. Students in the newly created Doctorate of Economic Development program, a joint effort between the NMSU College of Business and College of Agriculture and Home Economics, will work with Starbuck and Peach on the project. The hope is to create a centralized location for information to be used by energy companies, environmental entities and state agencies when formulating policy. “The energy-water connection runs in both directions,” Starbuck said. “Water, often contaminated, is produced as a by-product of oil and gas production. At the same time, it takes a lot of energy to get water to where we need it.” “In an arid state, these energy and water connections are very important,” Peach said. “Obviously, the issues become even more complex given the current financial and economic crisis and highly volatile energy prices.” Arrowhead Center is a nonprofit organization owned by NMSU. Its mission is to promote economic development and student engagement in New Mexico. Funding for this project was made possible by New Mexico’s congressional delegation.
